Graphs and Data Interpretation

What Is This?

Graphs and charts turn lists of numbers into pictures that are quick to read and compare. Data interpretation is the skill of reading these displays accurately — finding values, comparing categories, spotting trends, and answering questions like "how many more?" or "what was the total?"

Why Does It Matter?

Graphs are everywhere: news articles, weather forecasts, sports statistics, science reports, and business dashboards. Reading them correctly — and noticing when they might mislead — is one of the most practical skills mathematics teaches.


Types of Graphs

1. Bar Graphs

Bar graphs use rectangular bars to compare quantities across categories. The taller (or longer) the bar, the larger the value.

Reading a bar graph:

  1. Read the title — what is the graph about?
  2. Read both axis labels — what do the bars represent, and what units are counted?
  3. Check the scale — does each gridline represent 1, 2, 5, 10, or more?
  4. Read the bar height against the scale.

Example data (Favourite Fruits, 30 students):

Fruit Students
Apple 9
Banana 7
Orange 6
Grapes 8
  • Most popular: Apple (9)
  • Least popular: Orange (6)
  • How many more chose Apple than Orange? 9 − 6 = 3

2. Pictographs

Pictographs use symbols to represent quantities. The key tells you how many each symbol stands for.

Example: 🍎 = 2 students

Fruit Symbols
Apple 🍎🍎🍎🍎 (4 symbols)
Banana 🍎🍎🍎 + half (3.5 symbols)
  • Apple: 4 × 2 = 8 students
  • Banana: 3.5 × 2 = 7 students

⚠️ Always check the key first — a half symbol means half the key value.


3. Line Graphs

Line graphs show how something changes over time. Points are plotted and connected with lines.

Reading a line graph:

  • Rising line → the value is increasing
  • Falling line → the value is decreasing
  • Flat line → the value is staying the same
  • Steeper line → faster change

Example data (Temperature during one day):

Time Temp (°C)
6 am 12
9 am 16
12 pm 21
3 pm 23
6 pm 19
  • Highest temperature: 23°C at 3 pm
  • Biggest rise: between 9 am and 12 pm (16 → 21, a rise of 5 degrees)
  • After 3 pm the line falls (cooling down)

4. Tables

Tables organise data in rows and columns. Read across a row and down a column to find a value where they meet.

Example (Books read per term):

Student Term 1 Term 2 Term 3
Aisha 4 6 5
Ben 3 4 7
Carlos 5 5 6
  • Books Ben read in Term 3: 7
  • Aisha's total: 4 + 6 + 5 = 15
  • Who read the most in Term 2? Aisha (6)

Common Question Types

Type 1 — Direct reading

"How many students chose Banana?" → read one value: 7

Type 2 — Comparison

"How many more chose Apple than Orange?" → subtract: 9 − 6 = 3

Type 3 — Total

"How many students were surveyed?" → add all values: 9 + 7 + 6 + 8 = 30

Type 4 — Trend (line graphs)

"Between which times did the temperature rise fastest?" → find the steepest rising section.

Type 5 — Combined reasoning

"Half of the Grapes voters were boys. How many boys chose Grapes?" → 8 ÷ 2 = 4

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1: Bar graph comparison

Data: Pets owned — Dogs 12, Cats 9, Fish 5, Birds 4. How many more dogs than fish?

  • 12 − 5 = 7 more dogs

Worked Example 2: Pictograph with key

Key: one symbol = 5 cars. Monday shows 6 symbols. How many cars on Monday?

  • 6 × 5 = 30 cars

Worked Example 3: Line graph trend

Plant height: Week 1: 3 cm, Week 2: 5 cm, Week 3: 8 cm, Week 4: 12 cm. Between which weeks did the plant grow the most?

  • Week 1→2: +2; Week 2→3: +3; Week 3→4: +4
  • Most growth: between Weeks 3 and 4 (+4 cm)

Worked Example 4: Table totals

Goals scored: Round 1: 3, Round 2: 0, Round 3: 5, Round 4: 2. What was the total, and what was the mean per round?

  • Total: 3 + 0 + 5 + 2 = 10 goals
  • Mean: 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5 goals per round

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Ignoring the scale If each gridline is 5, a bar reaching 4 gridlines means 20, not 4. Always check the scale first.

Mistake 2: Forgetting the pictograph key Four symbols with a key of "1 symbol = 10" means 40 — not 4.

Mistake 3: Misreading half symbols A half symbol in a pictograph is half the key value: half of 🍎 = 2 means 1.

Mistake 4: Reading the wrong row or column in a table Use a ruler or finger to track across the correct row and down the correct column.

Mistake 5: Confusing "how many more" with totals "How many more A than B" means subtract (A − B), not add.
