Cause and Effect

What Is This?

A cause is the reason something happens. An effect is what happens as a result. Cause and effect are connected: causes always come first; effects follow.

The relationship between them is one of the most fundamental ways we make sense of the world. We use cause and effect constantly — when we figure out why a plant died, why a friend is upset, why an experiment worked, or why history unfolded as it did. Every meaningful explanation involves cause and effect.

Why Does It Matter?

Recognising cause and effect helps you understand WHY things happen, not just THAT they happen. This skill is essential for:

  • Science — understanding what causes phenomena (gravity, weather, chemical reactions)
  • History — understanding why events occurred (wars, migrations, revolutions)
  • Reading comprehension — understanding why characters behave the way they do and how events connect
  • Real life — making good decisions by predicting the consequences of your actions
  • Problem solving — figuring out what is causing a problem so you can fix it

Without cause and effect, the world is just a series of unconnected events. With it, the world becomes a system you can understand and act in.


Signal Words for Cause and Effect

Authors use specific signal words and phrases to show cause and effect relationships:

Signal words that introduce a CAUSE:

  • because
  • since
  • due to
  • as a result of
  • thanks to
  • for this reason

Signal words that introduce an EFFECT:

  • so
  • therefore
  • as a result
  • consequently
  • this led to
  • this caused
  • thus

Example: "Because the rain fell heavily for three days, the river overflowed its banks. As a result, the bridge was washed away."

In this sentence:

  • Cause: heavy rain → Effect: river overflowed
  • Cause: river overflowed → Effect: bridge washed away

Cause and Effect Patterns

Pattern 1 — One Cause, One Effect

The simplest pattern: a single cause produces a single effect.

"Because she forgot her umbrella, she got soaked in the rain."

  • Cause: forgot umbrella
  • Effect: got soaked

Pattern 2 — One Cause, Multiple Effects

A single cause can produce more than one effect.

"The volcanic eruption sent ash high into the atmosphere. Crops failed across three countries. Flights were grounded for weeks. Temperatures dropped worldwide for two years."

  • Cause: volcanic eruption
  • Effects: crop failure + grounded flights + global temperature drop

Pattern 3 — Multiple Causes, One Effect

Several causes can combine to produce a single effect.

"Years of overfishing, rising ocean temperatures, and increased pollution led to the collapse of the local fishing industry."

  • Causes: overfishing + rising temperatures + pollution
  • Effect: industry collapse

Pattern 4 — Chain of Cause and Effect

One effect becomes the cause of the next effect, creating a chain.

"Because the chemistry teacher was sick, the lesson was cancelled. As a result, the students missed an important review session. Consequently, many of them performed poorly on the test the next day."

  • Cause 1: teacher sick → Effect 1: lesson cancelled
  • Cause 2: lesson cancelled → Effect 2: missed review session
  • Cause 3: missed review → Effect 3: poor test performance

Each effect causes the next effect — that is what makes it a chain.


How to Identify Cause and Effect

Step 1 — Identify what happened. Find the events or facts in the passage.

Step 2 — Ask "Why did this happen?" The answer is the cause.

Step 3 — Ask "What happened as a result?" The answer is the effect.

Step 4 — Look for signal words. Signal words confirm the cause-and-effect relationship.

Step 5 — Test the connection. Reverse the events: did A really cause B, or did they just happen together?


Correlation Is NOT Causation

This is one of the most important concepts in cause and effect. Two events can happen together (correlation) without one causing the other (causation).

Example: "Every morning, the rooster crows. Every morning, the sun rises. Therefore, the rooster's crow makes the sun rise."

The rooster crow and the sunrise happen together (correlation), but the rooster does NOT cause the sun to rise. They are both caused by the same thing (the cycle of day and night).

Test for true cause and effect:

  • Does the cause come first in time?
  • Would the effect happen WITHOUT the cause?
  • Could something else be the real cause?

A real cause-and-effect relationship survives all these tests. A coincidence or correlation does not.


Worked Example

Passage: "Many bees have been dying in recent years. Pesticides used on farms weaken bees' immune systems. Bees also lose habitats as wildflowers are replaced by single-crop fields. Diseases spread more quickly in weakened populations. As a result, beekeepers around the world report losing up to 40 percent of their hives each year."

Causes:

  1. Pesticides weaken bee immune systems
  2. Habitat loss from single-crop farming
  3. Disease spread through weakened populations

Effect: Beekeepers losing up to 40 percent of hives each year

Pattern: Multiple causes producing one effect

This passage uses cause-and-effect structure to explain WHY bees are dying — not just to report THAT they are dying.


Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Confusing cause and effect with sequence

Sequence simply says one thing happened after another. Cause and effect says one thing made another happen. "I ate breakfast. Then I went to school." is sequence. "Because I ate breakfast, I had energy at school." is cause and effect.

Mistake 2: Mistaking correlation for causation

Two things happening together does not mean one caused the other. Always test the connection.

Mistake 3: Identifying the wrong direction

Make sure the cause comes BEFORE the effect. If the effect comes first, you have the relationship backwards. "I am tired because I am sleepy" puts the effect before the cause — both terms describe the same state, not a cause-effect chain.

Mistake 4: Missing the chain

Some passages have multi-step chains where each effect becomes the next cause. Identifying only the first cause and last effect misses the connections in the middle.
