Making Inferences
What Is This?
An inference is a logical conclusion that a reader reaches by combining information in the text with their own background knowledge. Authors do not state every detail explicitly — they trust readers to "read between the lines" and figure out what is implied. Making inferences is the process of using what the text gives you and what you already know to arrive at a conclusion the text never directly states.
The equation for an inference is:
Text Evidence + Background Knowledge = Inference
Why Does It Matter?
Almost every piece of reading — fiction or nonfiction — requires inference. Characters' emotions are rarely labelled directly; readers infer them from actions and dialogue. The theme of a story is never stated outright; readers infer it from the events and the characters' journeys. Historical texts assume readers know context. Scientific articles assume readers can draw logical conclusions from data. Making inferences is not an advanced or optional skill — it is fundamental to all meaningful reading.
What Inferences Look Like
Type 1 — Inferring Character Feelings
Authors show characters' emotions through actions, speech, and physical description rather than simply stating the emotion. Readers must infer the feeling from these clues.
Example: "Maya walked into the classroom and slid into the back corner seat. She kept her head down and pretended to read until the bell rang."
The author never says Maya is anxious, shy, or unhappy. But from her actions — choosing the back corner, keeping her head down, pretending to read — a reader can infer she does not want to be noticed and feels uncomfortable or anxious.
Type 2 — Inferring Unstated Information
Sometimes a passage implies facts that are never explicitly stated.
Example: "The doctor peeled off her gloves, washed her hands, and made her way down the long corridor to the waiting room. She took a deep breath before pushing open the door."
The author never states what news the doctor is about to deliver. But the deep breath before entering the waiting room strongly implies the news is difficult or serious.
Type 3 — Inferring Theme or Message
The theme of a story is its deeper meaning — what the author wants the reader to understand about life or human nature. Themes are never directly stated; readers must infer them from everything that happens in the story.
Example: In a story where a young girl spends the summer helping her elderly neighbour tend a garden, learning patience as she watches seeds slowly become flowers, the theme might be: "Growth takes time and cannot be rushed."
No character states this directly. The reader infers it from the events and the girl's experience.
Type 4 — Inferring from Nonfiction
Inferences are just as important in nonfiction. Readers must draw conclusions from data, evidence, and descriptions.
Example: "In 1900, the average life expectancy in the United States was 47 years. By 2000, it had risen to 77 years."
The text does not state why this happened. A reader with background knowledge about medicine, sanitation, and nutrition can infer that advances in these areas contributed to the increase. Without inference, the numbers are just numbers.
The Three-Step Inference Process
When making an inference, follow these steps:
Step 1 — Find the evidence. What does the text actually say? Identify the specific details, actions, words, or data the author provides.
Step 2 — Add your background knowledge. What do you already know that helps explain or extend the text evidence?
Step 3 — Draw a conclusion. Combine the text evidence and your background knowledge to reach a logical conclusion the text does not directly state.
Always check: Can you point to specific evidence in the text to support your inference? If not, you may be inventing rather than inferring.
Worked Example: Full Three-Step Process
Text: "When the coach read out the team list, Jamie scanned it twice. His name was not there. He folded the paper quietly, put it in his pocket, and walked out to the car park without speaking to anyone."
Step 1 — Text evidence: Jamie scanned the list twice. His name was not there. He folded the paper quietly. He walked out without speaking.
Step 2 — Background knowledge: When someone does not make a team, they feel disappointed. Quietly walking away and not speaking can indicate trying to hide strong emotion.
Step 3 — Inference: Jamie is deeply disappointed that he did not make the team and is trying not to show how upset he is.
Strong Inferences vs Weak Inferences
Not all inferences are equally valid. A strong inference is supported by specific text evidence. A weak inference (sometimes called a "wild guess") goes far beyond what the text supports.
Text: "She did not eat her dinner."
Strong inference: She was not hungry, or she was upset about something. (Supported by: not eating can signal lack of appetite or emotional distress.)
Weak inference: She was about to run away from home. (No evidence supports this — it goes far beyond what the text provides.)
The test of a strong inference: Can you point to specific words in the text that support it?
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Stating explicit information as an inference
If the text says "She was terrified," stating "She was terrified" is not an inference — it is a restatement of what the text directly says. An inference involves information the text implies but does not state.
Mistake 2: Going too far beyond the evidence
Inferences must be logical and supported by text evidence. If your inference requires information that the text does not suggest at all, it is a guess rather than an inference.
Mistake 3: Ignoring background knowledge
Readers sometimes make weak inferences because they do not apply what they know. If a character is described standing at a graveside, background knowledge about funerals and grief should inform your inference — not just the surface description.
Mistake 4: Treating all inferences as equally valid
Some inferences are better supported by evidence than others. When asked for an inference, always cite specific text evidence. The strongest inferences are those that most readers would reach from the same clues.
