Landforms and Bodies of Water

What Is This?

A landform is a natural feature of the Earth's surface — mountains, valleys, plains, plateaus, and more. A body of water is any significant accumulation of water on Earth's surface — oceans, rivers, lakes, and more. Together, landforms and bodies of water make up the physical geography of a place, shaping climate, vegetation, where people settle, how they travel, and what kind of economy they can build.

Why Does It Matter?

Physical geography has shaped human history more than almost any other single factor. Mountains have served as natural barriers and borders. Rivers have provided water, transportation, and fertile farmland, leading early civilizations to form along their banks. Coastlines have enabled trade and exploration. Understanding landforms and bodies of water helps explain why cities, countries, and cultures developed where they did — and continues to shape where and how people live today.


Major Landforms

Mountains

Tall, steep landforms that rise sharply from the surrounding land, often grouped into mountain ranges. Mountains can act as natural barriers, affecting climate (rain often falls on one side, leaving the other side dry — called a "rain shadow") and limiting travel and trade between regions.

Examples: The Rocky Mountains and Appalachian Mountains in the United States; the Himalayas in Asia.

Plains

Large, flat or gently rolling areas of land, often with fertile soil ideal for farming. Many major cities and agricultural regions are located on plains.

Plateaus

Flat, elevated areas of land with steep sides — essentially "tablelands" raised above the surrounding terrain. Plateaus differ from mountains in that their tops are flat rather than peaked.

Valleys

Low areas of land between hills or mountains, often formed by rivers cutting through the landscape over time. Valleys often have fertile soil and access to water, making them attractive for settlement.

Hills

Elevated landforms, similar to mountains but generally smaller, lower, and with more rounded tops.

Canyons

Deep, narrow valleys with steep sides, typically formed by rivers slowly eroding rock over millions of years.

Examples: The Grand Canyon, carved by the Colorado River.

Deltas

Areas of land formed where a river deposits sediment as it flows into a larger body of water (like an ocean or lake), often creating fertile, fan-shaped land.

Examples: The Mississippi River Delta.

Peninsulas

Areas of land surrounded by water on three sides, connected to a larger landmass on the fourth side.

Examples: Florida is a peninsula.

Islands

Areas of land completely surrounded by water on all sides.

Examples: Hawaii.


Major Bodies of Water

Oceans

The largest bodies of water on Earth. There are five oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern. Oceans cover about 71% of the Earth's surface.

Rivers

Long, flowing bodies of fresh water that typically begin at a source (like mountains or melting snow) and flow downhill into a larger body of water (an ocean, sea, or lake). Rivers have historically been essential for transportation, farming, drinking water, and trade.

Examples: The Mississippi River, the Nile River, the Amazon River.

Lakes

Bodies of water surrounded by land. Most lakes contain fresh water, though some (like the Great Salt Lake) are saline (salty).

Examples: The Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario) along the U.S.-Canada border.

Seas

Smaller bodies of salt water, often partially enclosed by land and connected to an ocean.

Examples: The Mediterranean Sea, the Caribbean Sea.

Bays and Gulfs

Areas where the ocean or sea cuts into the land, forming a partially enclosed body of water.

Examples: Chesapeake Bay, the Gulf of Mexico.

Straits

Narrow channels of water connecting two larger bodies of water.

Examples: The Strait of Gibraltar, connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Erosion and Landform Formation

Many landforms are shaped over time by erosion — the gradual wearing away of rock and soil by wind, water, and ice.
